Crowcon’s highly successful Vortex range of multi-channel gas and fire detection control panels has been extended to include an ATEX certified Exd Flameproof version, the Vortex FP. This allows use in Zone 1 and 2 hazardous area applications, such as process analyser house monitoring or FPSO protection.
Capable of monitoring up to 12 gas detectors, the Vortex FP is also compatible with smoke/heat and flame detectors, and up to three of its input channels can be used for fire detection. Each channel has one fault and three alarm levels which can be combined to trigger up to 32 output relays, allowing connection to a range of external alarms and safety devices such as fans or valves. Intrinsically safe (IS) safety barriers can also be incorporated for use with IS gas or fire detectors.

Iron and steel form the backbone of much of the modern world from building structures to car bodies, ocean going ships to electricity pylons. However, such inert and stable end products mask the intense and highly hazardous processes that are involved in the production of their raw material.
When iron is smelted from its ore, it contains more carbon than is desirable. To become steel, it must be melted and reprocessed to reduce the carbon to the correct amount. It is in these furnaces and other processes that gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) build up and can become a hazard.
Protecting workers from toxic poisoning and flamamable gas risks is necessary throughout the making of steel. As toxic and flammable gases are constantly present, monitoring leaks from the coke ovens during heating periods, blast furnaces or in confined spaces is vital and is the reason gas detection is essential.
